There
was an ancient silk route that brought more than luxury
Along this route, fraught with hardship and
peril, the deepest expressions of the human spirit passed
- Greek thought and science, Indian mysticism, a passion for
God of the desert fathers. It is captured in metal, cloth,
spice, song. In this trade they borrowed and learned from
each other, left traces in each other's forms and beliefs.
You can hear that commerce in their music and
poetry, feel it in the dances and rhythms, see it in the weave
of cloth and calligraphy, know it in the insights of the Sufis.
This legacy is not lost in the sand. It is alive.
It pulses still with a unique power to illuminate, to refresh,
to thrill.
We live in a time where unprecedented contact
between peoples seems to throw up more borders and tension
than dialogue.
But there have been age-long exchanges between
Persian, Arab, Khorassan, Indian, and Hellenic peoples - each
feeding something that becomes a source of timeless knowledge.
CARAVANSARY aims to bring this unbounded sea
to our distracted, soul-less, three-minute culture.
From Sufi meditation groups, to middle-eastern
drumming and dance classes, to Rumi readings and festivals,
to Quwaali singing workshops - our aim is to foster greater
awareness and experience.
